Current research

This project is launched against the background of an intense public debate and a dramatic situation for the European integration which has been going on since 2008 and six years later still is acute. The issues at stake address the fundaments of the integration, what it is and what it will be. They are posed with a relevance and urgency previously unknown. Much of contemporary European debate circles around the idea of Europe, sometimes consciously but often unconsciously referring to supposed claims knitted to the word Europe. The idea of Europe is indeed loaded with meanings, not the least with claims which are shifting depending on who is talking, when it is used and what issues it is addressing. The different meanings and claims given to the idea of Europe is the heart of the problem. This project will study the most commonly presented ideas about Europe. It will give an account of the professed claims of the European idea and illuminate historical prerequisites and validity for them. Its main objective is to highlight essential dilemmas of the idea of Europe.
