About Yael Feiler

I was born and raised in Israel, where I was trained and worked as an actress and playwright. My first play Isha my ha'adama ( Woman of Earth) won an award at A'cco Theatre Festival 1981. 1982 I was nominated as a playwright for the prestigious Kinor David (David's Harp) prize.
After moving to Sweden in 1983, I focused on Theatre Studies and completed my doctoral thesis at Stockholm University 2004: The Nation and his wife: Feminism and Nationalism in Israel as seen through the Plays of Miriam Kainy.
After my dissertation 2004, I have been working as a lecturer and researcher at the Department of Theatre Studies, Stockholm University.
During 2009-2013 I was employed at Södertörn University, where I was responsible for a drama course combining theory and artistic practice. I have also taught courses within Teacher Education at Stockholm University and at Södertörn University. I have also held different administrative positions such as Student Advisor and Director of Studies.

A notable research project I conducted 2005-2008 revolved around the reception of three European productions of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, with a particular focus on its anti -Semitic content.
2008, I conducted a survey on behalf of The Writers’ Guild of Sweden and wrote a report on a number of Swedish theatre’s procedures and criteria regarding recruitment of playwrights, with a particular focus on gender and equality.
2009/2010, I was responsible for a project on behalf of the Multicultural Centre, Sweden & the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs, mapping transnational cultural activities in Sweden.

I am particularly interested in the theatre’s social and political importance and its relationship to the surrounding community, which is why the application of critical theories such as Gender and Post Colonial theories on the field are central to my research as well as to my teaching.
Here at the Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, I am employed as a Senior Lecturer in Theatre Studies teaching in all modules at undergraduate level.

Parallel to my academic work, I have over the years been engaged in artistic activities as a theatre director, dramaturge and translator of drama. I am also active as a journalist, debater and lecturer. Have been engaged as a member of the Swedish National Council for Cultural Affairs’ reference group for the independent theatre groups.
