About Giulia Giubergia

Background

Since September 2013, I have been working as a Ph.D. candidate in Religious Studies, focusing my research on the sacred in the context of memorialization in public space The backdrop of my analysis is the public space of Cairo, Egypt, during and after the winter 2011 uprising. In this revolutionary scenario, various state and non-state actors participate in confrontations that are not only physical and violent but also symbolic over the definition and ownership of the sacred values materialized in the public, spontaneous memorializations of death. In the dissertation, I analyze memorials as material reflection of the rise of competing notions of the sacred that threaten previously established sacred forms. The analysis is aimed to expand our understanding of how the multiple ideas of the sacred shape, and are in turn shaped by, the process of memorialization that is negotiated and contested in the public, urban space.

I completed a BA degree at the University of Turin in Arabic and American Languages and Cultures with a dissertation entitled "Abu Zayd – A Humanistic Hermeneutics of the Qu’ran." I hold an MA degree in Islamic Theology (with focus on Islam in the West) from Leiden University. My MA dissertation was centered on the (ideological and theological) challenges that political participation posed to those Egyptian Salafi groups that, after the ouster of Mubarak in January 2011, decided to involve themselves in politics.
