Elizabeth Edwards: Photographs and the Practice of History Some Thoughts on Method and Historiography

Seminarium

This paper asks how we do history in the age of photography. I shall begin with a brief critical overview of the advice given to historians on How to read photographs suggesting that this advice reflects the uneasy the disciplinary relationship with photographs as historical sources and is revealing of the assumptions that underlie the practice of history itself. I then go on to consider the historiographical implications of these positions. In particular I argue that the advice given fails to address the historiographical disruption to relationships with the past, offered by photographs. I argue that photographs go to the very core of the fundamental underpinning assumptions of the practice of history itself relationships with time, ideas of distance, the constitution of an event, agency and even the building of contexts.
