About Daniel Brodén

Presentation

My academic work centers upon the study of both fiction and culture. My dissertation Dark Shadows over Folkhemmet investigates Swedish crime film via a combination of film genre history and cultural studies. Its main thrust is on how this popular genre has, from the 1940s to the present, provided critical views on the socio-cultural transformations of the Swedish welfare state widely known as Folkhemmet (“The People’s Home”). For several years I have taught and conducted research at the University of Gothenburg on such subjects as American and European media culture, black humor and political violence in film. My research interests include Swedish and Scandinavian media history, cultural history and interdisciplinary perspectives on modernism and modernity. I also have a degree in Journalism and several years of experience as a newspaper reporter.

Current project

I am presently writing on Roy Andersson’s filmmaking as a part of the research project Religion, Culture and Health at the University of Gothenburg. The study emphasizes film’s capacity to critically elucidate the human situation and the development of the welfare state.
