About Göran Larsson

I am a professor in Religious Studies and deputy dean for the Faculty of Arts. While my research is focused primarily on Islam and Muslims in Europe, I have also written about Islamic theology, Quranic studies and issues related to religion and the media.

Although I did my PhD in Religious Studies at the University of Gothenburg, I have also held positions at Uppsala University and Södertörn University, and have been a guest researcher at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands (spring 2004). Between 2011 and 2014 I was affiliated with the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo, Norway.

I am conducting research into Muslims in Europe (especially in Sweden). I am contracted to write the volume for Brill’s Islamic legal document (Sweden); this project is done together with Dr Mosa Sayed at the university of Uppsala, Sweden

I am responsible for one externally funded research project on apostasy and Islam, i.e. people leaving Islam and Muslim debates about apostasy in both history and contemporary times. This project is funded by the Swedish Research foundation (VR). I am also part of a second reserach project on how the current conflicts in the Middle East have an impact on Swedish schools (VR). Besides these projects I am also part of a large reserach project on the display of Islam in European Museums.
