About Tobias Hägerland

I am a senior lecturer in Religious Studies and Theology, specialising in Biblical Studies, at the Department of Literature, History and Ideas, and Religion. After earning my doctoral degree from the University of Gothenburg, I was employed as a researcher and teacher at Lund University from 2009 to 2017. At Lund I was appointed Reader in New Testament Studies in 2015.

My current research is focused on understanding how ancient schooling may have influenced New Testament texts. I have investigated parts of the Synoptic Gospels from this perspective, and I am now engaged in a more extensive project pertaining to Paul and his location within the Hellenistic tradition of paideia. In addition to this, I am interested in the Gospel of Matthew as an expression of emergent Christianity in the late first century. My previous research was devoted to questions about the historical Jesus, and within that field I published my dissertation on Jesus and the forgiveness of sins, two international conference volumes, several articles and a book co-authored with Cecilia Wassen in Swedish (a revised and expanded English version will be published on T&T Clark in 2021). I am a member of the steering committee of the Historical Jesus section at the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) Annual Meeting.

One of my concerns is to contribute to high scholarly and pedagogical standards of education. I teach and supervise students from introductory courses up to, and including, the doctoral level. I take a special interest in questions about forms of assessment in higher education. Currently, I also work as a supervisor at the Pedagogical Development and Interactive Learning (PIL) unit in our University.

Additionally, I have engaged occasionally in public debate about collegiality, professionalism and true viewpoint diversity in the academy, and I am a member of Heterodox Academy
