About Clemens Cavallin

My research interests are broad and include Hinduism, Ritual theory and Catholic Studies. My Ph.D. thesis The Efficacy of Sacrifice (2002) was within the first field, more precisely focusing on Vedic sacrifices, while my second book, Ritualization and Human Interiority (2013) was within the second field of ritual theory.

I have also opened up a third research specialization within Catholic Studies with research on the novels of the Canadian artist and author Michael O’Brien. In 2017, Justin Press published my biography of O'Brien, and in 2019, Ignatius Press published a second edition. A French translation was published in 2017 by Salvator

I am also directing the research project Religion on Campus: A Study of Views on Religion at Two Indian Universities together with professor Åke Sander. The focus is on the relation between Indian forms of secularity and the academic study of religion.

Besides teaching courses on religions of Asia, I have been active in the development of field study courses in India and several projects that aim to cultivate connections between Indian universities and religious studies at LIR.

I have also (2007, 2008, 2010) been teaching at CIPS (the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies) at the University of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Hercegovina at their masterprogram in religious studies.

During the fall semester 2013, I was a STINT fellow teaching the course “Introduction to Hinduism” at Haverford College in the US.
