Eva Lilja, Professor Emerita in Comparative Literature

Key Words: Metrics, Versification studies, Rhythm

My main work is Svensk Metrik [Swedish Metrics] 2006, a standard book in versification, written in cooperation with the Language Committee of the Swedish Academy. It consists of 655 pages in three parts: a verse theory, a verse history and finally a practical part teaching methods for analysis. Here, modern free verse is treated in the same way as traditional metered poetry. The basic unit of versification is found to be a small speech phrase with two prominences. This phrase replaces the foot as an analytical tool. An abridged version of about a hundred pages is to be found in Svensk Verslära 2008 [Swedish Versification].

I am also involved in a project studying aesthetic rhythm. So far, we have distinguished three gestalt patterns, three basic principles for experiencing rhythm: serial, sequential and dynamic rhythm. We have also tested Mark Johnson's concept of image schema as a tool for analysis and combined it with gestalt psychology and neuroscience.
