Transcultural Threads: On Cecilia Vicuña's Textile Poetics

Research profile seminar, Lecture

Guest lecture within the research area Languages, Literature and Culturality, Department of Languages and Literatures. All interested are welcome!

This presentation will explore the productivity of the quipu, the ancient Incas' computing and writing system based on woolen threads of colored knots,as a figure of transculturation in the work of Chilean poet and visual artist Cecilia Vicuña. Drawing on recent conceptualizations of the lyric that explore contemporary configurations of "transnational poetics" (Ramazani 2009) as well as on Latin American critical discourse on transculturation (Ortiz 1940, Rama 1982), hybridity (García Canclini 1989), relationality (Glissant 1990) and heterogeneity (Cornejo Polar 1994, 1996), my reading will trace different articulations of the figure of the "knot" as a metapoetic trope and as a complex instance of intermedial and cultural transfer in Vicuña's poetry. I am particularly interested in examining how this poetry resignifies the practice of the quipu as well as the rich Andean tradition of textile arts as a way of negotiating between indigenous cultural heritage and globalized modernity, between hegemonic discourses and alternative practices, as well as between textual and visual-haptic aesthetic and epistemological traditions.
