Comparative Literature

Do you want to become a good reader? Or a good writer? Do you wish to know more about people’s writing and reading in different periods? In that case, comparative literature is an appropriate subject for you.

You carry out textual analysis and textual interpretation. You acquire knowledge about how literary art and narration undergo change in different periods and cultures, genres and media. Literature’s aesthetic dimensions are investigated but also its existential significance and social preconditions.

In our general literary study courses you acquire knowledge of the history of literature, textual analysis and literary theory. You can also read courses such as "Literature and gender" and "Literature for children and young people". Together with the Department of Swedish we offer courses in Swedish teacher education. Our educational programmes have a clear link to research activities. In this subject, research is carried out within e.g. reading, early literature, gender and literature, modernism and popular fiction.

Comparative Literature can be studied in the first cycle and second cycle and may comprise a main field of study for the Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree with 60 credits, Master’s degree with 120 credits and PhD. Some of these courses are also offered as distance learning. All courses are given in Swedish.

An education in comparative literature offers knowledge and skills that are in demand in many areas of society. You also acquire experience in analysing stories in different media. You train in oral and written expression, reasoning and producing articles in the fields of science and cultural journalism. These are competencies that you can then make use of as teacher, librarian, writer on cultural matters and editor. The education also enhances your attractiveness for different types of business and cultural institutions; wherever a humanistic education and competence are valued. Our former students work, for example, as editors in publishing companies, researchers, translators, project managers, public relations specialists as well as within the advertising and computer game industries.
