Session 7

Governance of Religious Diversity

While the religious landscape in Nordic countries was relatively homogeneous for decades it is today characterised by pluralisation, secularisation and a reconfiguration of religion in the public sphere. Parallel to this, new expectations have arisen regarding the role of religious organisations as civil society actors, as a result of welfare reforms having led to an increased focus on freedom of choice, increased user participation and diversity.

The aim of the session is to explore how governments and religious organisations respond to these parallel changes. How do governments govern (religious) diversity? How do religious organisations respond to the new challenges and opportunities? What strategies do religious organisations have to handle the growing diversity in society and within their own realm? By analysing different examples from the perspectives of the state, public actors and religious organisations, the session wants to contribute to the discussion about the role of religion in the public sphere and its governance.
