Session 13

Transformations of Middle Eastern Churches in Contemporary Diaspora

The aim of this session is to explore how Middle East churches in contemporary diaspora upholds and changes traditions. We want to know more about the connections between these processes of change and continuity, in relation to being a church in societies that are not Middle Eastern.

How do these churches, often with a very long history in the Middle East, and many times as a Christian minority in a Muslim majority situation, understand and construct themselves in, for example, in Christian majority societies or in societies with far reaching secularization?

How do they relate to the Churches in the Middle East or other churches in diaspora? And how are these processes connected to generations, gender, age, language, nationality and social class? We welcome both empirical and more theoretical papers, which aims at presenting current research in this topic.
