Session 17

Establishing, changing and negotiating religious organizationsin urban settings

The aim of this session is to explore how religious organizations are involved in ongoing changes in urban settings in Europe. Globalisation, intercultural contacts and migration are re-shaping the religious landscape in larger cities and the suburbs in Europe. “New” religious groups and congregations are arising, not least Pentecostalones.

Why and how aretransnational and/or migrant religious groups established in these cities? How are differentidentities, and values established, negotiated andchanged among the newly establishedreligious groups in meetings and interactions between different types of migrants andmigrant groups or churchesand institutions in society.

How do migrants or migrant groups or churches relate to international religious communities or to the religious traditions in their“home”countries? We especially welcome empirical papers on the current situation, but also theoretical contributions are accepted.
